“It’s Time to Raise the Curtains…”

For the Muppet theme, we wanted to replicate the Muppet Theater where lots of Muppet craziness takes place. In the Muppet Show, the proscenium of theater has red columns with gold inlay and red curtains with gold fringe.

As we would be creating our version of the proscenium as well as the footlight area, we needed lots of red cardboard. At our first Community Painting Day, Brian and Bich painted tons of cardboard red.

I then cut that cardboard up into strips to be used for the sides and top of the proscenium.

To get the ornate gold pattern, I sourced a floral design and then converted it to a vector shape in Adobe Illustrator. I brought those vector paths into my laser cutting software and cut out a template from posterboard.

From there, I used “Vintage Gold” spray paint and painted the repeating texture on the cardobard.

For the curtains, I ordered four 20 ft. long curtains (used for weddings) and cut them to the length I would need to fit within the proscenium.

For the scalloped curtains at the top, I cut shorter strips of the curtains and attached gold fringe.

I then stapled the curtains, followed by the curved, scalloped pieces to a long 2X4.

With the help of my friend Brian, we assembled the pieces together to bring the stage to life!

(In the final arrangement, we will have the curtains going all the way down).
