Make Your Own Kermit Costume

While you can buy Kermit costumes commercially, I thought I could make one that would suit our ‘nod-to-the-character’ costume theme for this year’s house.

I started by buying a (pretty cheap) hoodie/sweats combo in light green.

To make Kermit’s collar, I got an old shirt and stood in front of a mirror drawing the pointy shapes, trying to match the general look.

From that, I created a pattern and used that to more accurately draw the pointy bits.

I cut that out and used that as my collar pattern. I had an old green shirt (from the 90s?) that I didn’t need anymore and which had a Kermit-like green color. I traced the new pattern on it and cut it out. Once that was done, I safety-pinned it to the hoodie, right underneath where the hood meets the rest of the sweatshirt.

I planned to have Kermit’s eyes on the top of the hood, so for those, I started with a Styrofoam ball which I cut in half and pinned (from the inside) to the top of the hood. I then used some black acrylic paint to paint the characteristic Kermit eye pupil onto the Styrofoam.

I added some Kermit shoes my wife bought me a while ago and the banjo I made (see this post), and I was ready to hang out in my swamp and sing about rainbows.
