Mini Monster Doors

In addition to the big door station behind where Mike and Sulley stand, I wanted to extend the scene a bit by adding a set of other doors heading back to the door warehouse. The idea was that I would make them smaller and hang them from the eves of our house.

Keeping with the theme of re-using materials, I chopped the Lego castle from last year’s Halloween house into mini-door-sized pieces.

I then detailed the front and tops of each door to give it the outline that we see in the movie.

At our Community Painting Days we painted the doors and their ‘frames.’

As I wanted to hang these doors, I wasn’t sure if the Styrofoam would be strong enough to handle that, so I decided to reinforce the tops of the doors with some wood. I created a cutting path in Illustrator and used a laser cutter to cut that path out in 1/8 in. wood.

I then glued (Great Stuff) those wooden pieces to the tops of each door.

Once the glue was dry, I added additional details.

When it was time to hang it, I bought some chain at the hardware store and used zip ties to connect the doors to the chain.

Finally, I added the doors to the eves of our house!
