Making a Mini Up House

As part of the scene this year, we will have a mini Up house (located at the peak of our roof). In order to have it be lightweight, I decided to created it out of Styrofoam.

To start, I gathered schematics of the Up house (thanks, internet!) and reference photos.

Then I cut pieces of Styrofoam to size and glued them together with Great Stuff (a really great adhesive for Styrofoam!)

I continued to work through the design, adding walls.

As the porch of the Up house is a place where many of the scenes from the movie happen, I wanted to add some details to that area. I cut some lattice and railing details out of foam core (yay Dollar Tree foam core!) to add to the porch area.

Then, I added those pieces to the rest of the model and added a roof. Ready for painting!

Grace took the lead on painting the house.

Sandra, Atticus and Micah, painted the Styrofoam balloons which will be added later.

In inserted balloon sticks into the Styrofoam balloons and arranged them like a bouquet, to be inserted in the chimney when I mounted the house to our roof.

I added an internal structure to be able to clamp the house on to our roof/eves and painted a few last details.

Finally, I mounted the house up on the peak of our roof!
